Not working at home at the start of writing this entry so this will come before the next Nachi Sakaue song I'd like to get done.

Still putting in job applications, it'd be nice if someone who isn't a recruiter can give me time of day. I know I can do *this* job better than a few people. Hell even some of the people who do this for money. Maybe that's a little arrogant, but that piece of solid salt lick comes out of my soul every time I see cringy or weeb trash grade translation done.

But anyway, enough complaining: onto the song! This one was on ワンダ・フルワールド (Wonder FulWorld, yes it's broken up this way), an album released by bassy. This song is pretty chill, up until this point I wasn't very familiar with bassy's stuff but them doing pop music really shows off their range, maybe one day I'll find CDs so I can listen to more of it.

So why do I care about this random song? I think Chata has a very chilled singing style, even her cheerful songs are really down to earth. But this song in particular sings out to me, for me it's about coming to an amicable end with someone you loved a lot, confident it's the right thing to do, whatever the trigger for this break up may have been.

The big focus is on how different they become as time goes by, how two lives intertwined for some amount of time begin to diverge onto radically different paths. I had a friendship like that, it didn't end very well, however immature my answer to how that friendship (spoilers: it was incredibly dumb), this song always gives me the strength to pick back up and acknowledge that even if the event sucked it can still make you strong, strong enough to push on.

Whoa that was a huge rant... sorry for anyone who didn't want that (I mean, it's a blog right D: ), onto the lyrics:

海に行く - Off to the sea

Gently rocking in the train, all I see
on the page turned are yesteryear's memories of us (1)

I was glad to have loved you, I became strong for someone else (2)
There were some promises I couldn't keep but
We went back to our respective places and greeted the a new morning
It just seemed like the right thing to do (3)

I wonder if even the food you hate would one day change?
We grow older, and fall in love with someone else

Another season comes and goes, seems the number of things
we don't know about each other just keeps goings up doesn't it?

These shadows that overlaid and stretched out, these two paths that twined together ... now forever diverge (4)

Let's head to the far off beach, before the rain starts to fall
What sort of song would I hum
What sort of colour would I be? (5)

I got off part-way there, taking in the fresh air
I've seen off plenty of people, now's the time to head on my own way
I was glad to have loved you, I became strong for your sake (2).
It just seemed like the right thing to do.
For sure, it just seems like the right thing to do. (6)

Footnotes:
1) Wording maybe needs improving.
2) Not in a cheaty kind of way (am I the only one who thinks like that?), but it seems like more of a "finally not for my own sake" kind of nuance to it. Maybe I suck at English too much to phrase it. The second time this type of phrase appears towards the end it makes more sense in this way so maybe it should be written like this.
3) Perhaps this is one of the times Japanese is able to hold more meaning in such few characters vs. English. Is rephrasing "For sure it has to be right" stepping over the bound for translation/localisation?
4) More borderline dancing for translation, I think the speed at which the song plays really tries to reinforce how heavy all the words are supposed to be.
5) I need to read up what this obsession with colours in some pop media is and find an Western analogue to this. At this point I subconsciously get what they're trying to say so my brain is heavily biased to the Japanese (I guess that's what interpreters are for?).
6) Same arguments, this song is pretty slow, maybe I've injected my love for the song too much here. Have I overstepped trying to provide a faithful translation? Please let me know!

Again apologies for the HTML failures, but hope you all enjoyed another insight into Japanese!

Turn back time

Now this song... I can't believe it didn't explode her career. It's nachi singing a normal tone; people complain she has a chipmunk voice, that it's just generic wailing. But not here! Shibayan's nu-disco Supernova mini album makes great use of the keyboard and more bass to drive the feeling of ruminating feelings in this song. Ugh ... it's so GOOD.

Hell even the entire CD tells a story:

1. So long
2. SUPERNOVA
3. Turn back time
4. Radiant Future

Or if you listen to the lyrics ...

1. cya loser
2. life is great
3. I immediately regret my decision.jpg
4. maybe the future isn't so bad

As you can tell I love these songs and nachi, so I've elected to do this one first. Also because I can't find it anywhere on the internet so I also bought the CD from Tsutaya in order to grab the lyrics sheet (jajajajajaja).

But anyway, onto the lyrics:

Turn back time
Vocal: nachi (坂上なち)
Lyrics: aya*k
Music: Shibayan

Japanese English
Close my eyes
In your face

Wish you're here 今でも 巻き戻せるならば
From my heart 誓うよ I will never let you go

*
All I want is just to turn back time
I'll give you everything I spent on you
All I have is just my heart full of you
I'll see you everywhere I went with you

All I want is just to turn back time
I'll beg you every time I think of you
All I have is only my love filled with you

I want to turn back time
I'll give you everything I spent on you
All I have is just my heart full of you
I'll see you everywhere I went with you

All I want is just to turn back time
I'll beg you every time I think of you
All I have is only my love filled with you

In my heart
From my heart 誓うよ I will never let you go

Repeat *

I close my eyes and I can always see it
I remember that day, those final moments
Everything about your face is burned in (1)
Those tears of sadness grip my heart

Looking back on that precious time
I remember that ever-shining smile (1)
I still wish you were here (2), if I could wind it all back
I would swear from my heart: "I will never let you go"

Those eyes began to darken, out of sight the fractures started to widen
as I held onto the pieces of your heart slipping away
I put all my faith onto the wish on a shooting star we saw
I was afraid of the dawn that was to come

*
All I want is just to turn back time
I would give you everything I spent on you
All I have is just my heart full of you
I see you everywhere we went together

All I want is just to turn back time
I beg for it every time I think of you (3)
All I have is only my love brimming for you
I'll make sure our two gears never break again (4)

I want to turn back time
I would give you everything I spent on you
All I have is just my heart full of you
I see you everywhere we went together

All I want is just to turn back time
I beg for it every time I think of you (3)
All I have is only my love brimming for you
I want us to spend time together once again (5)

I always wished in my heart
If I could meet you one more time all over again
I would promise you: "From now I will never get it wrong"
From my heart I would swear to you: "I will never let you go"

Your eyes welled up in tears, all those unvoiced feelings
Raced out and up to, disappearing into the starry sky
Even if we can't see the shooting star in the black, would my wish still come true?
I drank in the cold air and whispered all these feelings

Repeat *

Footnotes:
1) I think when faced with intense Japlish like this interpretation is necessary, taking into account the context around it. It feels like perspective in the verses also changes sometimes so it's not always clear in this song.
2) Sometimes the Japlish can use what seems like the wrong tense and so the translation should attempt to integrate the "intent" of the original English words used (as arrogant as that might be). The last line of this verse could also be: I swear from my heart I will never let you go. Keeping the line in the present tense as that's what the main voice is thinking at the moment. Pls japoness why is future and present tense mixed.
3) I think aya*k messed up tenses here too so it's supporting argument that sections that fall under (1) and (2) do require adjusting for interpretation.
4) I would is a great substitute here, as it denotes potential in a way that supports the "If I could achieve ___" nature of the chorus.
5) Sometimes I don't think super romantic lines like this work in English at all, but being an Engineering/Arts major I don't think I'm well read enough to 100% make this call.

I apologize for the formatting if it makes side-by-side comparison incredibly difficult. I decided to use a really rudimentary HTML table and I'm not too clear on how to format it nicely on a blog-width-page. Romaji to be added on request if someone really wants it for singing/learning purposes (most of nachi's stuff isn't in Joysound or UGA so why even tho?).

I hope this has helped someone understand where my translation style comes from and a taste of what I intend to do if I find a song with lyrics I care about (with a lyric sheet to back me up).

Who am I?

Hello.

Maybe you've seen this name on various online games a long time ago, maybe you vaguely remember me from SUB48 working on the first AKB movie or a TV show or two. I won't lie now, I'm using this as writing material to get employment. Being an engineer who was as good at writing Python/C code as he was writing FedEx and customs documentation to get heavy metal network switches into other countries that life was slowly killing me.

My primarily love is the Trance/Electronic space. Ideally I'd like it to be peaceful and have a good beat that I can zone out and jam games on while it plays in the background. Combined with server room noise, rain noise and ear cleaning tracks are perfect for a late night trying to get a new job or chilling with people.

This blog is primarily to upload translations of songs I like from doujinshi circles in Japan, which I have been getting pretty hooked on ever since I started my old job and let Lord youtube's autoplay decide what music I was to listen to.

While this layout seems kinda boring the unique gimmick I hope to bring to my translations posts are discussions on how words and things can be translated. I feel quite a lot of translations on blogs and stuff have people who aren't wrong but have very slight mistakes that start to chip away at peoples' foundations when learning Japanese. Even if people call them "weeb trash" or Japanophiles or something like that, I think the passion they exude for something is to be admired, however you may feel about the stereotypical packaging it comes in.

I don't have many examples of this but if I see something I'll load it up for reference.

So who do I listen to? Easy:
Alstromeria Records
ZYTOKINE
Hatsunetsu Mikos
Shibayan records

Who are the artists? Maybe also easy:
Nachi Sakaue
itori
aki

So basically... anyone who shows up on a ZYTOKINE CD.
